What do we take from visible signifiers of the unseen, the unperceived? On-screen: flat barriers impenetrably inform us about the presence of the empty, the spatially clear. It tells us that there is nothing to see by showing us something to see. What’s the spatial difference of one pixel volumetric container? What happens when you fill it? Can we really design nothing? Is it suddenly something once we’ve designated specific meaning, when it physically takes up space, or if it has some kind of cultural, emotive, or aesthetic value?

Welcome back to the halls of the CalArts Graphic Design Program, newly digitized and soaked in #0000ff blue. After over a year of physical distance, we wanted to build this website as an attempt to recapture a fragment of the magic that lives in these halls you know (or don’t)… Instead of presenting the End of Year Show as a direct gallery, our dedicated team of digital craftspeople have meticulously redrawn some of the most meaningful areas of the design department and pinned the work of our peers across the halls, studios, and production spaces we remember so dearly. We’re so excited for you to explore this space, and hope to see you all very soon.
